Rural Schools Support

Village schools destroyed by the earthquake are struggling to be rebuilt. The post-quake centralisation of schools in many counties means that villages must rebuild their schools themselves. While funding is still being sought, children are attending classes in structures that are no more than bamboo boards on a dirt floor, with no heating or electricity, run by volunteer teachers, with few or no teaching resources.

The combination of a lack of resources and being unable to afford to board at the central school, means many schoolchildren are not currently attending classes at all. In an attempt to address this problem, SQR purchases and personally delivers a selection of required textbooks to each village child that should be attending school. The books are packed neatly inside a brand new backpack, alongside a selection of other necessities (stationery; sports equipment; winter warmers; hats; gloves). We also donate teaching materials to the school itself.

The trips are a great success, not only in terms of bringing essential supplies to a remote village school, but delivering a message to the people living there that organisations such as SQR have not forgotten about them.

What your contribution could provide

  • ¥100 (approx. €10/US$15): A backpack filled with textbooks, exercise books, stationery, toys and winter warmers, for one child.
  • ¥1000 (approx. €100/US$150): One Chengdu Sports Aid trip to an earthquake-affected community, including a donation of sports equipment.
  • ¥2000 (approx. €200/US$300): Sponsorship of one disadvantaged student through an academic year at a central school, including room, board, and educational equipment. This can be done through a donation to SQR, or we can help you sponsor a child directly.
