Hard work, patience, determination, grit (!) and lots of cooperation from so many people and organisations have really made a difference. An example of one of the thousands (tens of thousands?) of relatively small-scale projects (medium-scale projects?) which needed groups of people to stick at it and find a way to get stuff done that needed doing.

As with many quake-affected villages in Sichuan, Xinlong is not appearing on any online maps that I've seen. The supermarket/library is based on the <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=%E4%B8%AD%E5%9B%BD%E5%9B%9B%E5%B7%9D%E7%9C%81%E7%BB%B5%E7%AB%B9%E4%B9%9D%E9%BE%99%E9%95%87&sll=31.39592,104.14464&sspn=1.202674,2.469177&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Jiulongzhen,+Mianzhu,+Deyang,+Sichuan,+China&z=14" rel="nofollow">nearest town, Jiulong</a>.

From the little I've read on this, studies show that if women are educated and economically able/active, then communities do well. I've tried to use this evidence to justify my belief that I should stay at home eating chocolate while my wife goes out to work, but apparently the studies do not cover this.
Any chance of a map reference (Google map?) to show where they are?
This is another excellent article based on long-term commitment and hard work. That sounds terribly worthy, but it's true.

The grants are in the region of 16,000 to 22,000 RMB (depending on the size of the family), but because Jinhua is less rural than Yanyan, rebuilding a house here costs between 50,000 and 70,000 RMB according to locals.

The concert at the Bookworm was a treat musically and a very moving occasion, trite as that sounds. Seeing Abigail meet her 'Afterquake CD' collaborators and being in the audience as they made music again was lovely. Having the Oscars handed round by the guys who did Lord of the Rings, District 9 and many more and were heavily involved in Avatar, was also reasonably memorable for all concerned.

What's the typical amount of a loan required (i.e the difference between grant and cost) for completion of a 'family house' (I presume mum, dad, son/daughter and perhaps grandparents living there)?

Inspirational story. Are the items they make available directly from them, or should they be purchased from people further down the retail line?
