SQR’s Review of the Year — 2010

Monday, December 20th, 2010

As 2010 draws to a close, Sichuan Quake Relief would like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters, one and all, for your continued support of our on-going efforts to improve the lives of those affected by the 12 May 2008 earthquake.

This has been the year in which SQR successfully transitioned from a relief-based organisation into one with long-term development projects that extend our remit beyond helping only those directly affected by the disaster. We’d like to briefly remind you of some of the significant events that punctuated our work this year, as well as outline the projects we will be busy with in 2011.

Rebuilding of Guangji Di Kang Le Kindergarten

Di Kang Le Kindergarten Sports Day

Much of our work this year focussed on our commitment to rebuild — and much-improve — a quake-affected rural community a few miles outside Guangji Town in Mianzhu. Part of this project involved rebuilding a damaged kindergarten that provides vital pre-school education to the youngest members of the community.

Di Kang Le Kindergarten and Community Centre opening ceremony

Work began in January 2010, and when completed just eight months later, the surviving building had been reinforced and the school had a new activity room, dormitories, an enlarged playground, and a kitchen now connected to a biogas digester.

SQR continues to support the kindergarten in a number of ways, with a position on the school advisory committee, and has recently been working with the principal to identify the poorest of current and potential students as beneficiaries of a scholarship scheme: 2000 RMB (US$300) provides one student with full tuition and daily meals at the kindergarten for an entire academic year.

Yushu earthquake relief

On 14 April 2010 the region of Yushu in Qinghai, northeast China, was hit by several large earthquakes which devasated the remote towns and villages of the county, killing almost 3,000 and injuring over 12,000 people — 1,400 severely so.

Earthquake damage in Jiegu Town (???), Yushu Icy roads Unloading the goods in Longbao Town

SQR delivered relief supplies to one of the afflicted towns and provided funding for a tent hospital to tend to the injured. Recognising the need for local knowledge, SQR connected with several local NGOs that are still working on long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts.

Second anniversary of Sichuan earthquake

When the second anniversary of the earthquake was approaching, SQR conducted hundreds of interviews in April 2010 to assess the situation as we entered into the mid-term phase of the recovery effort.

Yingxiu landslides

The town of Yingxiu and its surrounding villages — already one of the most severely-affected areas during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake — was once again struck by tragedy in the summer of this year. Torrential rainfalls triggered landslides and floods which swept away newly-rebuilt homes, destroying what was left of people’s possessions.

SQR launched a donation drive in order to try to provide the affected people with essentials such as blankets, towels and hygiene products.

CSA activities and fund-raisers

Chengdu Sports Aid played an active role throughout 2010, as both a fund-raiser and continuing to bring fun and games to quake-affected communities. Sports-based fund-raisers such as the annual half-marathon and fun-run and the ABE Charity Cup football tournament were organised by SQR and dedicated volunteer supporters, and a swim-a-thon raised money for SQR over the summer.

We also continued to receive the generous support of the Chengdu business and social community, being the beneficiaries of year-end fund-raising events such as the Chengdu International Women’s Society Christmas Bazaar and the ABE Christmas Party.

Guangji Di Kang Le Community Centre

NGO capacity-building workshop

As part of SQR’s efforts in the rural Guangji community, in partnership with Disaster Relief Shelters Foundation we constructed a new community centre next to the Di Kang Le Kindergarten.

This centre is now in active use and forms a lively part of community life, offering a variety of cultural activities for young and old, and a resource for local grassroots NGOs to build their own capacities to develop projects and network with like-minded members of their community.

Seniors' Teahouse

Expanding the centre’s resources and integration into the wider Guangji community forms the focus of SQR’s work during the first half of 2011. As well as those activities that are already underway, we plan to begin providing support services specifically targetting the disabled community in the vicinity of Guangji.

Thank you!

SQR would like to extend our sincere thanks to each and every one of our supporters. Our work was founded on a community spirit and we deeply appreciate the means and encouragement you have given us to carry on our work throughout 2010, and into 2011.

We are sure that next year will be an even more successful twelve months for SQR (and to kick off the new year, we will have an exciting announcement to make in early January!), so please do continue to keep up-to-date with our activities.

It just takes a few minutes to make an online donation to SQR, in any one of 76 currencies. Please consider making a donation to us today!

Wishing you all a Happy New Year, and the very best for 2011,

The SQR team

Community events at SQR’s Di Kang Le Community Centre

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Seniors' Teahouse

As part of SQR’s on-going community development work in the Guangji area, regular, free activities for the local people of Shihe and other surrounding villages of Guangji are underway at our Di Kang Le Community Centre.

  • Villagers young and old have packed out the centre to standing-room-only capacity to enjoy recent popular Chinese films such as Aftershock and The Love of the Hawthorn Tree, with snacks and tea provided. Movie-watching is very much a social activity here, with lively discussions about both the on-screen events and all manner of other topics going on while the action plays out.
  • As well as these popular, regular, entertainment-based movie nights, a series of educational and documentary films will be shown. These films describe, for example, improved farming techniques and best practices, aiming to help this agricultural community further develop its efficiency and productivity.
  • Another successful series of events has been the karaoke evenings, bringing the very popular pastime of China’s urban dwellers to the villages of Guangji.
  • A newly-formed local youth-support group will hold weekend activities for local schoolchildren, such as calligraphy practice club and a reading group, to provide an alternative to comic books and computer games.
  • Seniors make up a large proportion of the local population, and as well as taking part in the above activities, are able to enjoy specially-targetted events. The centre provides a warm, safe, comfortable meeting place for informal gatherings to play chess, go (weiqi), or simply chat over a flask of tea.

In addition, CSA has been running more skills-development sessions at Guangji Elementary School. The area has no public park areas in which local children could play after school or at weekends, so in cooperation with the school staff, CSA has engaged a group of forty Grade 5 (age 11-12) students in a variety of structured Saturday afternoon sports-based activities quite different from their usual PE lessons. In the past few weeks, Chinese and foreign volunteers have travelled the two hours’ drive from Chengdu to put the children through their paces with focussed lessons on football (soccer), dodgeball, and ultimate frisbee, all with an added element of English-learning.

The sessions will be expanded in the coming weeks along the lines of SQR’s very successful 2009 SAME Camps, with future activities based on arts and music for rotating groups of students. If you are interested in taking part in these sessions, please email csa@sichuan-quake-relief.org. Details of future sessions, and other planned activities at the community centre, can be found on our events page.

CSA sports skills sessions already showing results

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

We held our third CSA sports-skills session at Guangji Di Kang Le Kindergarten yesterday, and according to project coordinator Cate, we’re already seeing improvement in the young children’s coordination and catching abilities.

CSA Sports Skills, third session [1] CSA Sports Skills, third session [2]

Ms Kang, the principal of the kindergarten, told us that other local schools have already heard about our sports skills project and are interested in participating. SQR will be visiting them in the coming weeks to discuss the project in more detail.

Finally, we’re happy to report that individual sponsorship donations are still coming in from people who participated in last week’s run. And speaking of fundraisers, this week our friends from Suzhou’s preeminent tex-mex establishment, Casa Zoe, got together with the Expatriate Association of Suzhou for a fundraiser in aid of SQR that brought in more than 13,000 RMB. Huge thanks to everyone who participated.

New CSA sports-skills sessions start at Guangji Di Kang Le Kindergarten

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

As well as organising its Yushu earthquake relief trip, SQR also soft-launched a new Chengdu Sports Aid project on the newly-resurfaced playground at the Di Kang Le Kindergarten in Guangji last Friday.

Groups of the older kindergarten students were introduced to a variety of different skills to improve their physical- and hand-eye coordination, ball skills, and team-playing abilities, incorporating fun games such as Duck, Duck, Goose and Simon Says into the mix. Key SQR volunteer Cate Papez will be leading the first few session as the children and kindergarten staff get used to the format. After the first session, Cate told us:

The kids were so enthusiastic, particularly about the Western games. Smiles broke out the moment we brought out the tennis balls. I look forward to seeing their skills develop in the weeks to come. We made enormous progress in just the first hour-long sessions!

Future sessions will be able to be joined by small groups of volunteers wanting to do something for the rural Sichuanese community. We are also interested in offers to sponsor the sessions. Please contact csa@sichuan-quake-relief.org if you would like to help.

Cargill’s Chengdu-based staff raise 122,500RMB for SQR and CSA

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The following is a translation of SQR Outreach Coordinator Li Yuanyuan’s original Chinese:

Cargill, an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products, has built 34 enterprises of either exclusively invested or joint venture in 20 provinces and cities in China. On December 20th, the third Cargill Seed Oil Festival grandly opened in Chengdu. Cargill took the opportunity to organise a fund-raising dinner party in support of SQR.

In the afternoon on December 21st, four volunteers from the South West University of Nationalities and I, accompanied by over 100 Cargill employees and clients went to the Dazhonghua Community Centre in Luoshui. When we arrived mid-afternoon, the local children joined us in games and activities. Because there were so many people involved, I divided them into two groups. One group stayed with the kids and the other group, led by the director of the community centre, Mr. Yang Yunxiu, went to visit the community.

“There are 995 families still living in the Dazhonghua Community Centre,” Mr. Yang explained, “and they are provided with facilities within the community, including a supermarket, a clinic, a barber shop and restaurants. The city of Shenzhen helped us to build the temporary houses so we could move in 3 months after the earthquake, and we have been living there since then. It is planned that before May 12 next year, we could move in the new lianzufang (cheaply-rented apartments designed for people in quake-hit areas).” He showed us a kitchen in a temporary house. “This kitchen shared by 10 families.”

Mr. Yang continued as we walked out of the temporary house, “Luoshui was one of the hardest-hit areas. 95% buildings collapsed during the earthquake, and all the businesses halted at the time. Now all the young people have gone to other places to make money, leaving the seniors and the kids at home in the town. The kids barely have any activities, so whenever you come to play with them, they are very, very happy.”

While we were visiting the temporary houses, the other group played happily with the kids in the recreational area. They enjoyed skipping rope, basketball and bowling. After 40 minutes, the two groups swapped activities. At half past four I gathered all the kids together so that all the people who joined this trip could give well-prepared presents to them.

We finished all the activities at the community centre and were on the way back to Chengdu around 5:30. Though we were tired and still had to spend a few hours on the road, we were satisfied: we now know better about the people affected by the earthquake and their conditions; we are happy that life is slowly improving and eager to know what else we can do for them in the future.

The dinner party sponsored by Cargill began at 7 o’clock at Daronghe restaurant. Two employees from Cargill took charge of the auction. Various things, including cloth roses made by the students of Weichuan Shuimo Middle School, baseball bats, footballs, CSA T-shirts and Cargill Olympics medals were auctioned for a total of 122,500 RMB. Our special thanks go to Grace and Simon from Cargill, who had worked hard to make sure that the auction could go smoothly.

On behalf of all the members of SQA and CSA, I would like to thank Cargill employees and clients who participated in the activity and the auction for their consistent support. We will make good use of the money, and let it reach the places which need it most.

Abigail Washburn reunites with Afterquake schoolchildren

Afterquake EP's Abigail Washburn reunited with the schoolchildren of Shuimo

Abigail Washburn made an emotional return to The Bookworm in Chengdu on Saturday evening for a special performance reuniting her with the children from Shuimo who performed on the fund-raising Afterquake EP.

Song for Mama

As well as treating the packed room to a selection of her newest songs with Kai Welch, they also invited Chen Honglin, Luo Shuang, and the other children on stage to sing Little Birdie, Song for Mama, and sing-along-favourite Sala (which, after such an impressive earlier performance, was requested as an encore by the enthusiastic crowd).

As a special bonus for the children (and a number of excited audience members), Oscar-winner Richard Taylor and Weta Workshop wizard Greg Broadmore made a guest appearance, enjoying the show and posing for photos with the children.

A post-performance rush for Afterquake CDs, all proceeds of which raise money for SQR, made a welcome end to a wonderful evening’s entertainment.

The following day Abigail, Kai and their engineer/vocalist/instrumentalist James joined parents and staff from EtonHouse International School, students from the South-West University of Nationalities, and the SQR team, on a Chengdu Sports Aid trip to Xiaoyudong.

After an hour or two of football, frisbee, basketball and other warming activities, Abby and Kai wowed the children with four or five songs in English and Chinese, and got them going with a sing-a-long version of Little Birdie. EtonHouse kindly handed out gifts of toys, games and clothing to the gathered children.

CSA trip to Luoshui

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

A glowing report of this week’s Chengdu Sports Aid trip from second-time volunteer John Fowler:

The Sichuan weather gods were smiling down as the CSA bus, kindly provided by EtonHouse International School, trundled up towards Luoshui. Onboard were a bunch of familiar faces as well as a group of volunteers from the South-West University of Nationalities (Minzu Daxue). There had been some concern that impending exams might prevent the kids from being able to take part in the day’s activities. However, after an announcement was made, and the word had got round that the students from Minzu Daxue had generously brought early Christmas gifts for all the children, the number of beaming kids playing in the sunshine swelled dramatically.

Panda-ing to the locals

The children were soon taking turns at human bowling, then panda bowling, followed by the rather more painful experience of panda bashing — such was the popularity of the Chengdu rugby team panda hat! Other children were gleefully occupied with a game offering a welcome variation on skipping. It involved a volunteer standing in the middle of a circle and spinning round with a rope that the kids on the outside of the circle would have to jump over. A riotous time was had by all with the exception of the poor CSA volunteer in the middle who tended to suffer from a combination of dizziness and nausea (thank you Tom and Penny!).

Before leaving there was just time for the university students to distribute their magnificently hand-wrapped gifts. The children disappeared off with big Cheshire Cat grins on their faces, and so did the volunteers. The day was an unmitigated success and a big thanks to all those involved!

Chengdu Sports Aid outing to Luoshui

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

This week our Chengdu Sports Aid report comes from SQR’s Outreach Coordinator Yuanyuan, who every week does a stellar job of helping to organise the trips.

After being forced to make a last-minute change of venue last time, this week Chengdu Sports Aid managed to get all the way to the Dazhonghua Community Centre in Luoshui. The volunteers were the foreign students from Humana of the South West University of Nationalities, and the students from Arts and Science College of Sichuan Normal University.

After announcing our arrival over the public address system, the local kids quickly joined our volunteers. They sang and played games together. After 30-minute warm-up, groups were formed for the different games. Many of the kids chose bowling — their favourite activity — with the others enjoying skipping rope and basketball. Everyone was enjoying themselves so much that the time flew by, and it was all-too-sudden that we had to say goodbye to each other.

The Sunday outings have been going for well over a year now, and are as popular as ever. During this time we have built up trust with the kids in the quake-hit areas, and they have became more open, active and closer to us. Watching many of the kids moving from the temporary schools to the brand-new ones, and families moving from temporary houses to the permanent buildings, we are happy for them. We hope to continue to be a positive element not only for them, but also for the thousands of people who are still struggling to rebuild their homes and communities.

EtonHouse school report

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Isabel Brough, the School Community Liaison over at Chengdu EtonHouse International School, has kindly provided her own take on their recent Chengdu Sports Aid trip, along with two of the accounts that the children wrote.

On Sunday 1st November, children and staff from EtonHouse International School joined up with Chengdu Sports Aid for a trip to the Quake Zone. Prior to the visit, the children (aged between six and eleven) had talked about the Earthquake in class and what effect it had had on the communities and people in the affected area. They reflected on their own privileged lives and the comparative hardship experienced by those whose lives changed so suddenly.

The roads outside Chengdu were unpredictable and several road blocks, broken-down trucks and tailbacks meant a diversion from the intended destination of Mianzhu to Xiaoyudong, a small village tucked under snow-topped mountains. Time was limited due to the diversion, however the children had time to play a few games, sing some songs and donate their toys, clothes and books which they, along with other children from EtonHouse, had collected.

At school the next day, the children were asked to write an account of the trip.

Our Trip by Amelie Parish (UK), aged 6

We set off to the Bookworm at 7.45 and got there at about 7.50. I waited for my friends and then the bus came. I sat next to Carolina and we took turns to play my DS. It took a long time to get there because on one way the road was blocked and the other way a bus broke down. Finally when we got there we didn’t end up where we were supposed to but we got somewhere in the end. The children were having lunch so we played. We continued to play when they came out and 20 minutes later we gave out the toys and clothes we brought for them. We could see a snow mountain and a piece of mountain that fell off and if anyone lived underneath they would have died. After we went for lunch but before we did we went to see the school and did a race. For lunch I had a bowl of chicken noodles and some of my Mum’s beef noodles. When we had finished we got back on the bus. The children’s houses fell down and they built new plastic ones. When we got off the bus we sang Dancing Queen and Twinkle Twinkle in English and Chinese. After we did that we got back on the bus. For a 3 hour journey me and my friends played on my DS. When we got back to the bookworm we had some drinks and food. In the end I went home. What a busy day! I had a lot of fun!

Our Trip by Jenny Ong (Singapore), aged 8

It was awful in the toilet but it was wonderful playing and sharing our things and toys to the Quake zone kids yesterday. We sat on the bus for nearly four hours. It was boring. My grandmother went with me too. Ms. Celi, Mr. Huw, Ms Jo, Ms. Penny, Ms. Elise… and lots of other teachers, boyfriends and friends went with us. Some of the kids there are rude to us, but some are gentle and kind. I don’t know why some of the babies have holes on their bottoms. Why do their parents cut their pants? The quake zone that we should go was blocked, because a bus have broken on that road so we couldn’t go through it. Then we ended up going to another quake zone. I told you about it just now. They brought us to their school also, the school was destroyed in the earthquake so they need to build another one. Then we had one race with the kids. Carolina the cheetah won the race, I was a little bit jealous of her. A lady told us that they are building a kindergarten too. Soon the teachers brought some noodles for lunch. It was delicious but Carolina didn’t like it so I needed to eat the left-overs of it. Ms. Elise said I am not picky at all. It is easy to feed me up. I asked her why did she think I was not picky. She said that because I can eat the vegetables that other people don’t like. Later when I finished my noodles Ms. Elise and my grandmother brought us to look at some of the chicks, ducks and a puppy. The puppy was so scared when it saw us. Last we sat on the bus to go back to Chengdu. When Mr. Huw was asleep he opened his mouth and tried to snore. Ms. Celi asked me to throw something inside his mouth. A few hours later, the Bookworm gave us some drinks and food. 20 minutes later my Dad arrived and took me home. What a happy and busy day I had. I also slept well last night.

Chengdu Sports Aid (surprise) trip to Xiao Yu Dong

Sichuan Quake Relief- Eton House visit to Xiao Yu Dong, Sunday November 1, 2009

Yesterday Chengdu Sports Aid organised a special outing for the parents, children and teachers of EtonHouse International School, which didn’t go quite according to plan but was a successful trip nonetheless. Mark Soper tells all:

Sunday was a lovely, clear day to be transporting a busload of children and adults from 15 different nations out to Luoshui. The students, parents, grandparents and teachers of EtonHouse International School’s year 2-5 programme also had donations of second hand toys, books and clothes stashed below. Everything was running according to plan. That is, until we got to within 20 km of our destination and found not one but two roads blocked by roadworks and broken axles!

The ever-dependable Yuanyuan, SQR’s Outreach Coordinator, made a couple of quick phone calls and had us in Xiao Yu Dong by midday.

No time for sports activities, but plenty of welcome arms and smiling faces greeting our arrival and dispersal of gifts. A walk around the brand new school and a gorgeous sprinkling of snow on the surrounding mountain tops made it all feel as if Christmas had come early to Xiao Yu Dong.

To everyone at EtonHouse, including Harry the driver, thank you for the wonderful thought and action that you put into helping us spread such welcome goodwill.

Photos of the day have been added to the ever-expanding CSA Photo Album. And don’t worry, Chengdu Sports Aid will be returning to Luoshui as soon as possible.

Chengdu Sports Aid trip to Xiao Yu Dong

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Sunday’s CSA trip was to Xiao Yu Dong Community Centre in Pengzhou. As usual, Mark Soper led the way.

A damp overcast morning in Chengdu didn’t curtail the enthusiasm of more than 20 CSA volunteers on our long-awaited return to Xiao Yu Dong. As usual, DouDou turned up with a big group from the South West University of Nationalities and we welcomed aboard a new group from Sichuan Normal University, organised by Jessica. Great work and many thanks to both!

Temperature-wise, it was a little cooler up in this village surrounded by awe-inspiring hills, but a quick walk-around to pick up the kids soon got us all warmed up. The warm-ups themselves involve splitting the kids and volunteers (and sometimes parents) into 3 lines of tunnelball, over and under, and rugby passing skills. It’s not often the bigger boys can concentrate long enough to stay in lines, but girls and smaller kids love the cooperative aspects of warm-up games. The boys love their rugby and basketball games later.

After 2 hours of play, everyone is hungry and it’s often sad saying bye-bye to the little ones who get so much entertainment out of a single morning. As ever, we can smile and know that we will be back to play with our friends another morning.

Chengdu Sports Aid trip to Wudu Community Centre (Mianzhu)

CSA: Wudu Community Centre (Mianzhu), October 11, 2009 -- 01

By all accounts, CSA had one of their most fun days out of all time last Sunday when they went up to a community centre in Mianzhu. Here are a few comments from CSA Coordinator Mark Soper.

I got to the Bookworm at 7.50am to find the group of volunteers from Humana already there laughing and chatting with the Chinese volunteers from the South-West University of Nationalities — a great start to a chilly morning.

On the bus to Mianzhu we heard some remarkable volunteer stories; it’s a humbling experience meeting some of the volunteers we get on CSA trips.

As ever there was no lack of energetic children looking to find new ways to expend their reserves of energy, but we were pleased to find there were almost as many grandparents as kids on this occasion. Their smiles were huge as the Humana group got things going with a couple of African melodies.

Standard warm-ups are always a laugh when we get into 3 lines of 15—20 kids and volunteers, practicing passing, throwing different-shaped balls around. Then it’s on to game time. Sunday’s variety included jumprope, rugby, 10 pin bowling, chair balancing, blind walking, frisbee-throwing (and general mayhem with the toddlers).

We were back by 4:30 in the afternoon, fitting in a 24-person lunch stop of well-earned beef noodles on the way. Most slept on the bus while the rest of us took sneaky photos of the sleeping faces — hilarious!

One day volunteering adds an extra day to my lifetime.
