SQR has been keeping up-to-date with the situation in Yunnan over the weekend and it appears that, despite fears of mudslides, conditions have remained stable and are being dealt with effectively, with cooperation between central and local government as well as NGOs working in the region.
Chen Duqiang from the Sichuan-based NGO Disaster Preparedness Centre has travelled to Yingjiang County and told us that provisions of tents, blankets, water and food have been distributed to the needy in a well-organised manner. Meanwhile, the Handicap International team, also based in here Sichuan, have spoken with the Yingjiang Disabled Persons’ Federation and were told that hospitals in the nearby towns and cities were relatively unaffected by the earthquake and have been able to treat the 314 injured people locally.
After safety checks were carried out and prefabricated temporary buildings erected where necessary, students have been allowed to return to school today.
