Reports are coming in of a strong earthquake hitting the Yingjiang region of south-west Yunnan. Early indications are that the magnitude 5.4 tremors has toppled buildings and killed at least 25 people, with over 250 injured.

The affected area, although extremely mountainous, appears relatively small and the authorities have acted swiftly and effectively with rescue teams and relief provisions for the 120,000 people evacuated so far. Several large NGOs working in the area have also contributed funding and resources to the relief effort, including the Chinese Red Cross, One Foundation, China Poverty Alleviation Foundation, and Oxfam, which has an office based in the provincial capital Kunming.

SQR is monitoring the situation as it develops.
